Do you have the habit of chewing your pen while you’re thinking? This might be something you want!

“I first wanted to make something so I could chew on my pen without making it dirty. When looking at the pen I noticed that you only use the ink, the other stuff is just there to hold filling more comfortable. Isn’t it possible to eat the whole cover? That was my goal, a pen where you can chew on and entirely eat. First gathered at a lot of pens and looked what makes it good to chew on.
With that information I made 3 different molds and started testing out different types of candy, the breaking point and which chew the best. When I found the shape and candy I made a final model in peppermint flavor. The candy which is used doesn’t stick on anything and doesn’t melt when it’s in your hans. (To get an idea: It has the same texture as candy bracelets.)It contains 22 pieces and is filled with edible ink. The only thing which isn’t edible is the small point where you write with. When finished you throw it away or put in in a new re-fill pen.”

Just two weeks ago, who would have thought that Egypt would be reaching a full week of riots?
It’s interesting times in the Middle East, and I wish I were over there to see it first hand.
Clicking through the Economist coverage, I found this photo. I was almost at this exact spot (in front of the Egyptian Museum) in December 2007; I remember photographing my brother riding the mini sphynx while we were waiting to get in:
One of my most vivid memories of (and favorite places in) Cairo was a Cafe/Tavern not far from Tahrir Square, introduced to me by a university friend, then a freelance journalist in Egypt. I can always count on her to bring me to the grungiest, most interesting local hang-outs.
The cafe was El Horreya. Despite its ceiling fans and open windows, cigarette smoke hung permanently in the air; it had an underground, distinctly revolutionary flavour.
Fluorescent lighting (of the old, non-daylight color temperature variety) gave the walls and high ceiling a dull glow, your shoes smeared the black-and-no-longer-white tile floor, and the high wooden shutters – reminding you that you stood about a foot below the outside ground – matched the worn wooden stools on which you sat.
The clientele was mainly silver-bearded men sitting in twos or threes, drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes. They talked quietly, played cards or read the papers. My friend (a voluminous plume of bushy blonde hair) and I looked about as conspicuous as we possibly could.
Still, conversing in English over a couple of bottles of Sakara, not one guest cast an eye toward us.
That was 3 years ago.
I can only imagine what it must be like there now; perhaps it’s overflowing with excited Egyptians, planning the next steps of this pivotal revolution…
I recently had the pleasure of meeting Billy of the Handsome Bag Co., and was immediately hooked on their concept. It rarely gets better than (re)using material that would otherwise inhabit landfills – especially in order to satisfy the city’s… shall we say, extravagant appetite for fashion and lifestyle goods.

Bags come stitched with a choice of HK/KLN Red, NT Green or Lantau Blue!
Billy and his partner Joseph (not the one affiliated to GoPublic) pull the “leather” – which I suspect is more like a PV or coated fabric – and other parts of scrapped taxis in order to make bags and accessories, while also using local community-friendly labour in the manufacturing process. It could only be better if they told me they stitched the bags together using discarded tyre cords!
